Open Your Ears

Today, second grade students explored what feelings arise when they listed to different works of classical music. Students shared how Blue Rondo á la Turk by Dave Brubeck made them feel joyful, the Finale from William Tell Overture by Gioachino Rossini made them feel a little nostalgic, and how Flight of the Bumble Bee by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakove made them feel as if they were zooming through the forest. “My goal is that when they listen to music that their minds are ON, and they aren’t passive listeners” says Marisa Hodgett-Chiang, Keys Lower School Music Teacher. For many of us, when we listen to classical music we are passive listeners, disregarding the intricacies and patterns that play out in a piece of music. Marisa teaches students how to actively listen to a piece of music so they can recognize those nuances and patterns which make each piece so special.
