Classrooms, blacktops, and stages were the sites of Chinese New Year celebrations at Keys over the past two weeks, as students at both our Lower and Middle School celebrated the upcoming Year of the Rooster. The celebration provided a meaningful opportunity for students to learn about a Chinese festival that is rooted in centuries old customs and traditions.
Kindergartners learned about Chinese New Year traditions and made their own roosters to ring in the year with color and creativity. The Shaolin Culture Center of San Mateo visited our Lower School and performed a brilliant Lion Dance for a captivated audience. Sixth and eighth graders worked with Mandarin teacher, Ms. Short, to learn how to make their own dumplings and shared their delicious creations with Middle School faculty and staff. And each grade at the Middle School designed and created their own Chinese dragon. Students from each grade presented their creations to the cheers of a packed gymnasium.
